A casement air conditioner is an air conditioner unit that is meant to fit into a casement window. Casement windows are somewhat outdated today, but still they are found much significantly and replacement parts for them are still being manufactured. The casement windows are those that are meant to swing and open. They are hung vertically by means of vertical hinges on the window frame. They can be swung either inside or outside for opening them. Fitting an air conditioner on such windows requires a different kind of mechanism. These air conditioners, known as casement air conditioners or simply window air conditioners sometimes need to be specially ordered.
When casement air conditioners are specially ordered, the fitters would visit the home of the person ordering it and take the required measurements. In some cases, the window might need to be altered to fit the air conditioner properly. Since casement air conditioners are always built to standard sizes, they would fit inside most windows, but some minor adjustments might be needed.
These air conditioners have a solid rectangular frame that is tightly fit into the window. It is important that this frame remain quite sturdy because it will have to support the entire weight of the air conditioner unit. Once the frame is fitted in, the rest of the air conditioner unit is slid into it and locked into position with the arrangements provided on it. When the casement air conditioner is fitted properly into place, all its controls will be inside the room while its drainage area will be outside.
It becomes imperative to arrange a proper drainage hose outside so that the air conditioner water is drained off to an acceptable area. This is highly important in air conditioners that are fitted on upper stories of apartment buildings so that the water does not flow into the apartments below or onto the street. For some windows that are longer, such as French casement windows, a different kind of arrangement is used. The air conditioner unit is fitted on the base of the window. New window panels are then constructed to fit in the reduced size of the window.
When casement air conditioners are installed, it is recommended to retain the original windows. If the air conditioner is removed for some reason, the same windows can be fitted into the window.
