Changing the way birthing women are cared for is a core aspect of Shanti Uganda. We are committed to providing mothers with a safe and respectful birth experience.

Maternal Health

Program Overview:

Located in Nsassi village, the solar powered Shanti Uganda Birth House is a joyful, bustling place, filled with new families and dedicated Ugandan professionals.  Our staff of five midwives,  nursing assistant, traditional birth attendant, and onsite laboratory technician provide a full range of perinatal services to our clients, both before and after birth.  These not only include antenatal and postnatal check ups, but STI testing for both mothers and fathers, nutritional workshops, prenatal yoga classes, breastfeeding support, and immunization appointments.  Additionally, Shanti Uganda offers doula care during births, access to emergency transport should the need arise, and a comprehensive family planning program.

In a country with almost 6000 maternal deaths per year, Ugandan women face a 1 in 44 risk of dying in childbirth.  Thanks to our well trained staff, we have never lost a mother at Shanti!  Our birth services run 24 hours a day, and women are welcomed like family.  Our serene, home-like setting and peaceful gardens provide a safe and nurturing environment in which to birth.  Our mothers are welcomed like family, and many return again and again to birth their subsequent children with us.

estarEstar’s Story:

Estar, aged 27, is one such mother. She birthed both her children, Simon Peter, now aged two and Donnatus, now a chubby nine month old, at Shanti and looks back on the experience fondly.  “These midwives were so kind,” she recalls.  “I miss my visits with them now, so sometimes I come to the Birth House just to say hello, or to take part in an educational workshop.  I am always happy to recommend Shanti Uganda to my family and friends.”
